(Do2Learn, 2015, p. 1) Scenario: One specific strategy that has worked for me in the past has been a behavior tracker. Students love positive reinforcement, and negative reinforcement because attention is something they crave. I had a conversation with each of my students with emotional/ behavioral disorders about goals for positive behavior (Do2Learn, 2015, p. 1). During our conversation, I would lead students to creating their own goals about behaviors they want to fix. For example, I would ask students what goals they would like to work on. They already know my expectations, and it because they are not following those expectations that something additional has to be created. If they do not have any ideas, I say, "(Student's name), do you think you should work on following directions?" (Student says yes.) I proceed to create their goal after they give me their wording. In that way, they take ownership of it. "Following teacher-given directions the first time seems like a good goal to work on. Would you like to work on that?" They have ownership of creating the goals they should work on, in the language that I want to see. Their ratings are from 1 to 5, and with a certain amount of points at the end of the day/week, they receive a prize. Giving students a positive reward after a positive behavior conditions them to work on being "good." The goal is to gently ween them off the prize, and teach them to do something correctly because that is the right thing to do. Without proper behavior, the student cannot move forward academically.
