Do2Learn, 2015, p. 1 Scenario: One strategy that I would utilize as a teacher of children with intellectual disabilities would be to use visual schedules. I currently use visual schedules with children in my learning support/ autistic support classroom, and they benefit greatly from this strategy. Visual schedules allow children to see the schedule for the day, when it is time to transition, a picture of the activity to which we are transitioning, and the subject or activity name itself. Students who cannot necessarily read are able to see the pictures and know what to expect once on activity is over. It takes away the anxiety of not knowing what to expect, and it provides a structure and routine to a child who does not have much of a routine in his/her mind. Visual schedules can be used for daily schedules, classroom routine changes when there is an assembly, and a special activity day schedule. Students will start to match pictures of activities/ subjects with the words, and be more familiar with school vocabulary. Websites:
